About the Author
Eiki Eiki is the creator of numerous yaoi and shojo manga. Her previous English-language releases include Train★Train, Millennium Prime Minister, and The Art of Loving. The last couple volumes were really fun, and this one was as well.I like how Ryoma just goes for it, he is unashamed of his love for Izumi. Even if he’s a little pushy at times, I mostly just enjoy it. And in this volume, Izumi realizes his own feelings for Ryoma. That leads to some sexy times, as well as some really cute moments. I love how Izumi just threw himself at Ryoma, and Ryoma tried to be respectful when he didn’t know what was going on. Izumi is kind of adorable at times, in the way that he relies on Ryoma, and Ryoma loves it.My only real problem with this volume, is the attempted rape scene. The author tries to make a joke of it at one point, and that was distasteful to me, because it doesn’t change what the characters were doing. But it’s also used as an important moment where Izumi realizes his feelings for Ryoma, and I don’t like that he needed to be assaulted in order for that to happen. I guess I’m happy that he got himself out of the situation, instead of being saved, but otherwise it bothered me.Aside from that, I enjoyed this volume. I like the romance between Izumi and Ryoma. I also enjoy Rei’s character a lot, and enjoyed the little glimpse we got between him and Shogo. Over the past two books, Izumi has come to terms with his burgeoning feelings for Ryoma. I imagine that the typical yaoi fan is something like Ryoma: comfortable with boy/boy interaction because they’re in love with the situation. Me, I sympathize more with Izumi — it’s the feelings and characters that matter to me, and I’m not always comfortable with the more explicit scenes (which have been fairly few so far).Izumi has given in to his fate and accepted that he’s bound to become a celebrity… which usually seems to involve him dressing as a woman. Meanwhile, there’s a lot of publicity interest in actor Ryoma’s “secret loverâ€. At a press conference, it all comes out.It’s the weird encounters in the world of fame that keep me entertained by this series. Izumi is basically famous for being famous… and for looking good as a member of the opposite sex. I guess it doesn’t take much more to briefly seize the imagination of today’s celeb-conscious culture, and at least super-manager Rei realizes that his lack of talent will eventually become an issue. (Rei is amazing, since he also ends up giving Izumi sex advice! Apparently, he’s a lead character in the spin-off light novel series, where he’s involved with Izumi’s older brother.)The increased attention brings the couple’s feelings for each other out, making them finally confess honestly to each other, although first we get a sequence where Izumi, like Clark Kent, isn’t recognized as being famous so long as he keeps his glasses on. Of course, that trick doesn’t work for long, and some life-threatening danger is apparently just what he needed to be clear for himself about how he feels. I’m not sure where Love Stage!! will go next, as we turn an important corner this installment, but I’m curious to find out more. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)
Typical manga: Assertive man and submissive man. Love and struggle from partners.Good parts: Super cute, plot is good and interesting, main characters compliment each other, and one is attractive.Bad part: The submissive guy is TOO feminine. They wrote his parts as if he was a girl 87% (made this number up) of the time and he's drawn VERY girly. It's kind of part of the plot, but still. Good yaoi manga.
Another great volume. Izumi is just too adorable for his own good. Can't say I blame Ryoma for going so nuts over him. This volume ends where the anime ends, so I'm eager to see what will happen in the next volume, since it's a complete mystery to me.
Sensei writes such a funny story. And Eiki-sensei draws such yummy illustrations. I can't wait till they make an English translation for Back Stage available for kindle!
I don't want to give you the details of the story. You'll want them to unfold naturally. Suffice it to say that the characters are likeable, the action believable and the storyline smooth and succinct. I really enjoyed it.
