Definitely a different but wonderful read and something most mothers of adult children can relate too, no matter what your circumstances. Just because you don't live in the hood, doesn't mean that you haven't at some point in time wanted to ditch your kids and walk out. I loved Juanita and respect her for taking action in a life that had no future and no purpose, except to support grown children who should have been self-supporting or even supporting her!This is a book that demonstrates that even lives that we view as mundane can be more if we, make the effort to change our perspective in how we view it. I don't see a sequel but I'd really like to know what happened after she left Paper Moon, after all that was just the beginning of her adventure.I loved the different characters and how they interacted with Juanita, her first meeting with Jess is so funny! I've traveled through Montana and it is some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen but being a city dweller, it does have an impact and when night comes its really night! This is a wonderful book that makes you root for all of Juanita's accomplishments and self-growth! Hooray!
I ordered the book in anticipation of the Netflix movie, "Juanita." Loved this book and the sequel, On the Right Side of a Dream. I read them both within 24hours of receiving them. The only disappointment was there are no more books in the series.
I love that the author was able to present such a candid, well-written and beautifully described journey of a low income, African American woman who did the unthinkable. She left the projects and her family and took a bus somewhere else. As a reader, I took that journey too! It was even more amazing once I googled the author. She is quite a clever woman!
This is my first book by this author and I loved it. The story feels so real, I could feel the heaviest of Juanita's old life, leave her, as she slowly makes her way towards the beginnings of her new life. I loved the way this character keeps moving forward even though she feels terrified of what may be around the next corner. I strongly recommend this book. It's not your usual syrupy romance story, but a story of courage, love and a lot of humor. Read the book first, then watch the movie.
I absolutely loved every word of this story. I hated for it to end, craved more, but was still satisfied with the ending. I smiled, laughed, felt Juanita's heartache and pain, rooted for her, and turned the last page with a sigh. An excellent "coming of middle age" read. Highly recommend!!!Author Adrienne Thompson
I saw the movie Juanita on Netflix and when the ending credits rolled I was pleased to learn it was based on a book! So I purchased right away! This is a story about a woman facing her fears and stepping out on faith! When she did she began to transform into a joyous woman at peace with who she is, not to mention finding a man to cherish her! Yes, Juanita, dance in the rain!!! Endearing characters, beautiful descriptions and story telling, I was sorry for the book to end! Can't wait to start the sequel book and movie. I had never heard of Sheila Williams but I am a fan now!!
I am sure many of us have heard this Dr. Phil-ism. I believe it is true in all its forms--self-fulfilling prophecies and such. DANCING ON THE EDGE OF THE ROOF is a simple, straight-forward book, and readers will benefit from its eloquence. Exaggerated, overblown writing may have its place, but Sheila Williams' first book will have a place in your spirit. Strip away the main character's (Jaunita Louis') skin color, occupation, neighborhood--all of the superficial things that can separate us from her story, and we will see ourselves. Facing the same challenges. On the same journey toward fulfillment.What I got from DANCING ON THE EDGE OF THE ROOF was a lesson: Do everything you fear to do. Get locks or a long weave, if you must. Learn to merengue. Take a trip to northern China. Study at an institution for culinary arts or interior design. Take your vacation in Fiji. Have a baby at 40. Get your MBA at 54. Do it all, because this is the only life we get. Even those who believe in a second life cannot be sure, so we ought to make the best of this world, this life's opportunities.I was reminded that I cannot blame anyone but me if I don't take those chances in life that will, in the end, make me the best form of myself that I can achieve.Good For The Soul.
I loved this book. The characters and their storylines and interactions were masterfully done. I read it almost in a single sitting. The characters were very interesting and well developed which made me care about them. I will definitely be reading more from this writer. Good job Ms. Williams.
