I grew up listening to Stax records. I always loved the feel in Duck Dunn's bass lines and he was a big influence on my own style of bass, along with my local hero James Jamerson. I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Dunn and the surviving members of Booker T and the MG's a couple of times in the 1990's. He was a really nice guy. This book is invaluable for studying the "less is more" style of playing. He could do more pounding a single note over and again with such feeling, than many players could running all over the neck. He played some innovative and instantly recognizable bass hooks as well. This book captures it all. Even though I've been playing for over 45 years and in all styles, I have learned from this book.
You can tell that the transcriptions were done by a player not a theory student. They read easy even when syncopated. I'd prefer to not have all the tab taking up half of the page but it's a necessary evil for selling books unfortunately. Great collection of tunes that will keep you busy for quite a while.
Great book, always wanted to know more about Duck Dunn and the Stax label's recording band. He and his band Booker T and the MG's were on almost everything out of Stax for years, including Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Sam And Dave and Albert King and many others. Also has the bass charts for many of the Stax tunes. Duck played on many many top hits out of that label and believe me you have heard them.
I love this book. Not only did I learn all about Duck Dunn, his equipment, life and experiences, but it is also chock full of transcriptions of his most famous bass lines. For a long time musician and bassist, it doesn’t get any better than this.
This book is a great read for those interested in the development of American Music over the last 60+ years. Not only was Donald "Duck" Dunn the house bassist for the Legendary STAX studio in Memphis, and The Blues Brothers, both of which have influenced generations of musicians, he also played on records by Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Elvis Presley and many others. This book details how those collaborations evolved and walks you through the career of one the most important sidemen in modern American history. It starts with a detailed bio of Duck's life, then walks you through 57 transcribed songs he played bass on. The audio accompanying the book is of very high quality, and the transcribed songs are extremely accurate. For bass players this is a must have for beginners to professionals.
Look, I'm sure it's a good book so I don't want to trash it with a one-star review, but I ordered this to read via the Kindle app and it is totally UNreadable on my phone (I've never had a problem reading books via the Kindle phone app until this book). As other's have stated, it looks like the pages are scanned and there's no way to scale it to a readable size. So disappointed. Do yourself a favor and buy the paper version instead.
Absolutely love the Stax sound and soul music in general so was naturally looking forward to this when I heard it was coming out. It really is a great book with great transcriptions and accompanying tracks to go with them. Makes quick work of learning and understanding Duck's infamous and economical style. I really would have liked to see some of the songs he did with Delaney & Bonnie included in the transcriptions. Minor point that won't matter for most and not enough of a misfire to withhold a star.
A fantastic introduction to the life and music of the greatest soul bassist of all time.
