When people are taught to play chess they learn how to move the different pieces. Of course that's necessary. Next come openings. To me they are presented as a hodgepodge of mysterious sequences romantically named. I am either too old or too lazy to remember seven or eight moves and their responses of the Ruy Lopez. If you know the relative value of the pieces, the importance of mobility and how the king can get out of check, you are better off than someone who has memorized dozen openings. This book teaches you how to checkmate after you've brought out your firepower including castling. This is not about just end games, although the diagrams are simplified and look like end game or puzzle diagrams. Once the opening moves are over, you need a plan to attack your opponent king while protecting your own. This book teaches you how to plan an attack. It uses programmed instruction which is exceedingly effective for me and many others. After working through this book, knowing only how to move the pieces, their values and one opening, say, PK4, you will be a significantly better player and be able to beat computer chess games at increasingly higher levels. You will also have fun.If you want to move the next level, read Chess the Easy Way by Reuben Fine, even only the first four chapters.

This is the first chess book I ever read. I bought this for my younger cousins as an intro into the great game. Even now after I have played 1500 games I still like to review the last section. This book is a classic. The best part of this book is you don't need a chess board. It is a program about identifying checkmates in one move, and checkmate patterns. It starts out with the rules, then the basics, progressively getting more complicated. A must own classic for any chess library.

Many years ago, I was quite a good chess player but I stopped playing when other things dominated my time. Recently, I showed my 12 year-old granddaughter how to play chess and she seemed to take to it naturally so I found my old copy of this book at gave it to her because I remember that it is a good primer for any new player. But realizing that if I was to play chess with her, I better sharpen up my rusty chess skills so I ordered a replacement copy for myself. I just started going through it and I was reminded of what a good book this is. Keep in mind, this is not an advanced chess book by any stretch of the imagination. It doesn't analyze the great games of the past or dig into the classic strategies. What it is, though, is an exercise to sharpen your chess skills. When playing with my granddaughter, I found myself making a few glaring blunders which is something I almost never did in the past so this book should help me work the kinks out of my playing. Unfortunately, I don't have the intense feelings I had years ago when I could see many moves ahead and the game was alive for me. After all those years, I find myself just using tactical combinations but no real strategy. But that may change if I start playing again and this book is an excellent way to brush the cobwebs away. I highly recommend this book to any new or intermediate player or to someone like myself who's getting back in game after a long time.

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess, by Fischer, Margulies and Mosenfelder, is arguably the most effective chess instruction book for beginners and patzers wishing to improve ever written. It is head and shoulders above the rest -- so far. (Who knows what the future shall bring in this new era of Magnus Carlsen and computer chess programs?) It is probably the last surviving text written in programmed instruction (a technique by B.F. Skinner which set the stage for computer teaching programs -- which is precisely what makes it so powerful and effective), and the most successful application of that technique. It's getting harder to find these days (especially the hardback version), because, despite its powerful approach to learning chess, it is getting buried under the pile of the thousands of chess books that preceded it. After all, it's a product of the 60s, and those who must always have to have "the latest and greatest" bray that it's outmoded and outdated, especially now that we have interactive computer programs (such as Chess Magnet School.com) that do what Fischer did in his book. *Nothing is further from the truth.* (In fact, someone could make a fortune by converting this book into an interactive computer chess app.) This is the timeless book that took me from "hopeless patzer" way back when, to one able to compete successfully in chess tournaments all over Los Angeles, and got me to the place of being a contender against everyone in my playing level. It's the book that got me good enough to run a junior high chess club for several years and train a team that won first place in the Los Angeles Unified School District's annual school-wide chess tournament. If you want a one-book library on learning to be a competitive chess player, this is it.

Don’t let the size of this little book fool you. “Bobby Fisher Teaches Chess” is packed full of valuable chess lessons, in a clever design that allows you to turn the book upside down when you reach the end and read it from back to front. This guide is perfect for the beginner, as well as the intermediate player who just needs a refresher course on endgame strategy. Laid out in question and answer format, Mr. Fischer shows you a chessboard set up and then asks you a question, e.g., “Can white mate”? Then it is up to you to analyze the positions of the pieces on the board and come up with the correct solution. You then turn the page to see if you were right or wrong. The questions become more difficult as you progress, until, at the end, you are solving complex endgames. The book ends with one final setup—a very difficult endgame question from one of his chess championships. The surprising answer only serves to illustrate how brilliant Bobby Fischer was.
